Rocky Raccoon went into his room only to find Gideon’s Bible

August 23rd, 2006

I saw a raccoon after dropping my friend off in Nonantum. This isn’t unusual; I see raccoons all the time. But it made me think of something…raccoons REALLY freak me out. Something is just really creepy about raccoons.

Many years ago Matt once saw two raccoons viciously fighting from his third (or was it fourth?) floor apartment. They were up on a tree fighting, and then one fell off the tree…fell alllll 3 or 4 stories down. The raccoon jumped down and the raccoons continued to fight! Not a story someone freaked out by raccoons needs to hear, huh?

Looking at photos of raccoons, I see they’re really quite cute. I had two stuffed animals of raccoons (the type where the big one has velcro paws and holds a miniature version of itself) named Betsy and Bernie and they were cute too. Cuddly.

Nevertheless, raccoons just give me the heebie-jeebies. Maybe it’s their hunched way of walking. Maybe it’s because many are rabid. Maybe it’s because when we lived in Watertown we had to use bungee cords to keep our trash can lids down so the crazy raccoons wouldn’t eat our garbage.

Once I saw a raccoon running around in the North End! One of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen…and pretty sad too. It was under a car and then ran down the alley. Poor raccoon — wonder how he got to such a densely populated area.

Other animals that give me the creeps? All reptiles. (including Karl!) Ferrets. Most birds, namely barnyard fowl. Rats. Fully grown pigs (but not pot bellied ones). Snakes. Bats. Rhinos. Zebras used to freak me out but now I like them but I’m still freaked out by zebra-print items.

Yeah, it’s Darwin at work right there. When humans become extinct/kill everything, it’ll be raccoons, e.coli, and kudzu left - nothing else.

On the other hand, I recently saw a chipmunk scurry into a shrub. They look nothing like the cartoons! All sneaky and striped…eww. And rats just suck - little more than squirrels with shaved tails - ick.

Yeah, why aren’t chipmunks 3 feet tall and with floor length turtlenecks? :-(

I remember that night we saw that raccoon under the car! Maybe he lost his way back to Drumlin Farm?

To this day, my parents still bungee-cord their trash cans to deter raccoons. Raccoons also make that weird squeaky sound to communicate with each other.

A former coworker of mine once had a raccoon fall through the screen of her skylight. The raccoon fell into her apartment and scrurried around before she was finally able to shoo him out of the sliding glass door. Then he hung out on the balcony and finally left for the night.

One evening, Steven and I were returning from Blockbuster and we spied a raccoon on my street. I said, “Hey, let’s go around him,” but Steven said, “No, we can just scare him off. Shoo, raccoon!” The raccoon looked at us, turned so his side was showing to us (to make himself look bigger) and arched his back. I said, “Right. We are going AROUND the racoon.”

Still, I don’t find them creepy. I don’t find any of the animals on your list creepy. :) The only animals that give me the creeps are buggies and some kinds of invertebrates.

Try waking up in the morning to find raccoon footprints (in the flour they managed to rip into) down your hallway rug, THAT’S creepy! And it was also the end of the cat door.

I’m bummed by the ferret creepers. Is there a story behind that?

I never thought they were creepy until I was in a house with a free roaming ferret…I don’t know why, but it totally freaked me out.

=( Funny thing, last night on a rerun of My Name is Earl a couple of characters had this exchange:

Randy: hey Earl there’s a long skinny dog lying down in the back seat. Oh wait he’s standing up, he just doesn’t have any legs. Maybe it’s a snake. Do snakes have hair?

Billy: They do when they’re ferrets!

    Nice!

we were not meant to be

There’s a creepy raccoon news story I just read, but I’m not going to link it to you because I don’t want you to be creeped out! :-\ Instead, you get the Dinosaur Comic (as linked above).

I love watching the raccoons who frequent my birdfeeder!
