Waking up to WRKO

March 16th, 2006

Matt insists on setting the clock radio to WRKO, the local radio station that features people like Michael Savage and Rush Limbaugh. I don’t know why Matt likes to wake up to that. He does enjoy pointing out the convoluted and faulty logic of those hosts, but I can’t tolerate it. Whenever I change the station, he changes it back to WRKO. It’s really difficult to wake up to such stupidity in the morning.

What I usually wake up to is the sound of a neo-Con kvetching about Massachusetts laws for one reason or another (Gay marriage? Gasp!) or arguing with someone who has called in to challenge their position.

This morning, I woke up to: “…and she gave birth to a normal, heterosexual child.” Uh. What?

I guess it could be worse. I could be waking up to Michael Savage. (Did you know his real name is Michael Weiner, he lives in San Francisco, and hung out with the likes of Allen Ginsberg in North Beach in the 70s?) But nevertheless, I wake up feeling like I’m being forced to read The Herald! Oh, the humanity!

Oh why, Matt, why? Why WRKO? Boston has a ton of great radio stations! For the love of God, WHY WRKO?!

    I’d wake up vomiting.

And I thought I was waking up sick because of the post nasal drip…no, it’s because of WRKO.

Oh, and wasn’t his real name Michael Weiner?

Whoops! That’s what I meant. Better fix that.

Sort of reminds me of the cafe near work where I often get my lunch. The food at the place is great, the people who work there are friendly, but their radio is usually tuned to WRKO (or whatever station it is), and around noontime who should be having his daily Klan rally but good ol’ Rush Limpdick. So when I’m waiting in line at the cafe, I sometimes page through the Globe or something to distract me. I’ve thought of not going to that cafe anymore, but for now I can’t resist…yes, their homemade mac and cheese is THAT good.

Well, the most interesting thing in the world is to listen to people that don’t agree with you. I listen to the nuts all the time. But unless you understand how they are arguing, you just can’t really comprehend it enough to get mad about it. In the morning, just listen to it and figure out, exactly, what you don’t agree with or what you do agree with — I’m an equal wake-up radio person…it’s kind of cool to get the brain flowing before you get up.

My hope is that having the radio on WRKO will annoy me so much in the morning that I’ll be forced to get out of bed. Having something I like on the radio doesn’t motivate me to move. Listening to ignorant, short sighted racists does.

Do you remember the other morning when they said something about how having airport security people who don’t speak English well is UNAMERICAN?

I actually loved to listen to the likes of Savage and Dr. Laura. Why do you ask would a liberal like me listen to that drivel? Well, I like hearing the other side and being just as informed from the conservative view as well as the liberal view. I also like laughing my asses off and getting my adrenaline up from yelling back at my radio!
