Why did the turkey cross the road?

March 12th, 2006

Well, if today isn’t the strangest day I’ve had in a while, I don’t know what is.

While driving on Washington Street in Newton, I saw two large, wild turkeys crossing the street. It was definitely in the top 5 strangest things I’ve ever seen in my life. Washington Street is a major road, and nowhere near any areas where I would imagine wild turkeys naturally roam.

How did they get there? What were they doing? Where did they come from? Where were they going?

People had to slow down to let them cross and a man pulled over and jumped out of his car with a camera.

I recognized them as wild turkeys right off the bat, because coming from New Jersey we had ‘em roaming around. I find them to be nasty and ugly. More wild turkey pics.

I am so curious. It was just such a bizarre sight to see. And I wish I had my camera!!!

I once saw a wild turkey crossing Washington Street in West Roxbury - now THAT was weird (I stopped to take a photo; getting a case of evil eye from the guy who stopped to stop traffic so the bird could get across safely).

For a while there were a few turkeys living around the Wells Avenue office park. One day I saw one crossing Centre Street near what is now the Subway. I guess even wild turkeys like upscale shopping.

I also have a picture somewhere of an owl sleeping the doorway of the Sweet Totmatoes in Newton Centre.

Eric: Good one. :-) That’s the only logical explanation!

That’s funny about the owl in Newton Centre!

Sort of like one day in 1995 or so, when a moose was running down the side of Comm Ave. in Boston!

Makes me sad, though, ’cause I think overzealous land developers are driving wildlife out of their natural habitats…

A moose! Wow. That’s REALLY weird. I wonder if something was wrong with the moose to come down this far south?

A couple weeks ago Tim and I saw something really weird on the side of the road…a nicely dressed guy giving a kind of sloppy guy a HAIRCUT! On the curb! It was in the kind of warehouse-y area of Berkeley…we almost had to turn around for a pic (and I really wish we would have)!

    That’s hilarious!

I just realized that in two of my comments here I said, “That’s REALLY weird.” But it’s true, all of these stories are really weird! Turkeys, moose, owls, men giving haircuts on the curbs…

The moose thing trips me out the most, though.

My favorite happened in the theatre district in Boston at about 2 a.m. A guy stuck a knife in my back while another guy watched. I told him that I had no cash because we had been drinking “mystery beers” at the No Name. I was the poorest person in the entire Hub he could be mugging. No credit cards, no cash. So he said he wanted something. I handed him my Western Civ notebook. And he said, “Good luck, man.” and then both of them ran into the night on Tremont. All my notes on Western Civ going with them.

It’s the weirdest thing, but he almost seemed empathetic to the fact I had nothing. And he said “good luck.” I can laugh about it now, but only because it was a pretty weird encounter.

That’s awful. :-( Wonder what he did with your Western Civ notebook?
