$40.03 is your total. Is this OK?
I don’t like those ATM/credit card keypad things at stores. I mean, they’re certainly convenient, but I am not very adept at using them for some reason. They’re all different. Some of them you swipe one way, some of them you swipe the other…some you have to press with a little stylus, some you use your finger…and the buttons you need to press are never uniform.
Today I was at the Star Market in Auburndale after work. I’ve got a touch of the flu or something, so I’ve been really spacy. It was already dark out, the rain was pouring, and it was chilly. I just wanted to get home.
I was rung up by a mimbo of a teenage boy.
The screen said: “$40.03 is your total. Is this OK?” And below that, you may either press YES or NO on the screen.
I pressed yes.
Vapid teenage cashier said, “It didn’t go through. Do it again.”
“$40.03 is your total. Is this OK?”
I pressed yes.
The cashier said, “It didn’t go through. You need to do it again.”
“Why isn’t it working?” I asked.
“Because you’re not pressing the correct button.”
“I’m pressing yes when it asks me if the total is OK,” I said. “What I am I supposed to press then?”
“You’re not supposed to press yes,” he said, speaking as one would speak to a complete imbecile, “you’re supposed to press enter.”
With my luck I’ll probably wind up billed $40.03 three times!

[...] I went to the Auburndale Shaw’s to get some tissues, throat lozenges, etc…and the stupid teenage cashier started yelling at me because when it says: “$XX.XX is your total. Is that correct?” I pressed YES, but apparently you’re supposed to press ENTER. (Apparently I forgot about that after a similar debacle at the same supermarket last October.) I swear, when interviewing at Shaw’s they must ask: “Are you surly, unfriendly, and kind of nasty?” And if you answer yes, they give you the job. I should have gone to Stop ‘n Shop — they tend to be nicer there. I would have gone to Trader Joe’s but I needed some NyQuil…which SHAW’S HAD RUN OUT OF, ANYWAY!!!! [...]
