Project 365: 03/09/09

March 10th, 2009

Here’s a real surprise for the pansies I photographed on 03/08/09…the temperature dropped down into the 30s and we got some snow! (This picture was taken on the side of our house.)

We have some confused flowers on our hands. After weather in the 60s over the weekend, I noticed these pansies in bloom in front of our house. Poor confused pansies; don’t they know it’s still wintertime?

Krissy (dressed in an overly tan ensemble) shivering while walking home from dinner at The Local…can you believe just a few days ago Matt was in shorts?

Matt and Karl. Wondering why Matt is wearing shorts in New England on a February evening? It was in the 60s! (But we didn’t hold our breath…stay tuned for some inevitable snow pictures.)

Sidewalk shoveling!

February 12th, 2009

I can’t wait until more of this snow thaws out so I can start walking to work again. I’ve mostly driven since the snow began. Each time I’ve walked since then, it’s been a pretty big ordeal.

A lot of people don’t shovel their sidewalks. At worst, it’s an icy mess, where I feel like I need a pair of ice skates just to get through it! I’m surprise that I didn’t fall. Sometimes I’ve had to walk in the street which also doesn’t feel safe.

I don’t understand how some people just don’t shovel their sidewalks. This is on roads like Comm Ave, which have pedestrians and bus stops, so cleared sidewalks are important. The worst part is that the City of Newton isn’t very vigilant in shoveling (what I assume are) city-owned sidewalks. These are sidewalks that are on medians in Comm Ave, along side municipal parking lots, and around parks. I’d like to see some sort of mandatory shoveling law instated here in Newton. These unshoveled walks discourage foot travel. I hate to drive a mile to work, but I don’t want to risk breaking a bone, either!

I don’t even mind walking when it’s cold out. I’m pretty hearty when it comes to cold weather. But it’s those unshoveled walks, man!! I miss walking to work!

Crazy icicles on the side of our house. Don’t worry, I wasn’t this close to it…I zoomed from afar.

“Must” we?

December 31st, 2008

From the Waltham’s official website:

The City of Waltham has declared a snow Emergency for Wednesday December 31st at 9:00 a.m. All vehicles “must” be removed from all roadways.

Channel 7 Storm Team

December 19th, 2008

Yikes. I’m watching the Channel 7 Storm Team and everyone on it is totally manic. Did they all just take some hyper pills before going on air? I like to watch storm coverage but I’m either changing the channel or pressing MUTE!

Shopping List Before Snowstorm

December 18th, 2008

Ingredients for goulash
Ingredients for waffles
Hot chocolate (or maybe rich chocolate Ovaltine!)
Salt (for sidewalks)

And after that…let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

I’m dreaming of a White Christmas…

December 17th, 2008

In my memory, I can only remember one White Christmas. And it wasn’t pretty. It was wintry mix, and it was nasty, icy, and miserable. I was 12, I think, and I had gotten a bunch of Beach Boys tapes for my birthday a few months earlier so I was listening to them on my Walkman as my dad navigated the icy roads.

Growing up in the New York and New Jersey (and when I was in California spending the majority of the holiday seasons in NY), you’d think I would have experienced more White Christmases than that. One of my favorite Christmas songs is “White Christmas”, but the uppity jolly version from the scene in “Home Alone” where Kevin is grooming himself. (As opposed to the moody croony Bing Crosby version) So…a White Christmas, is it too much to ask?

Well, according to Accuweather AND Weather.com…2008 might be the year where I can experience a White Christmas. It snowed today, it’s going to snow on Friday, Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, and possibly next THURSDAY a.k.a. Christmas! Even if it doesn’t snow, I’m sure there will be substantial snow on the ground.

Friday’s storm sounds like it has the potential to be a doozy, too!
